U.S. Ambassadors Tony Hall, Francis Rooney and Ronald Spogli hosted an unusual holiday event to spotlight the cause of the world's poor . At the sumptuous Villa Taverna, guests began the evening as they might have suspected - with a receiving line and a glass of prosecco - unaware of how the evening would unfold. Following opening remarks, guests were divided into three groups based on the color of a card randomly chosen when entering. Fifteen percent of the guests were fed a full-course meal, replete with white-glove service and crystal brimming with red wine. Another 25 percent of the crowd was given a little protein in a combination of rice and beans - they represented the world’s middle-income group. But the vast majority of the guests, representing the world's poor--60% of the population--ended up in a room at Villa Taverna with a cold bowl of rice, the meager food ration that they can afford. The occasion was inspired by Oxfam America, an NGO that uses “hunger banquets” to illustrate the severity of poverty and hunger.

[…] “Everyone on this Earth has the same basic needs; it is only our circumstances — where we live and the culture we were born into — that differ. Some of us are born into relative prosperity and security, while billions — by no choice of their own—are born into poverty. As each of us walked in the door here tonight, our fate was decided, at random. Hunger and poverty are destinies so often out of the control of those who inherit them. We hope tonight has given us all better understanding of the realities and that by working together we can begin to make a difference.” full text

Hunger is a global problem that we have the power to end. But it needs your political and spiritual will to end it. It’s as simple as that. full text

[…] As the U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, I have the task and great honor of collaborating with the Vatican on efforts to further the cause of human dignity. In recent years, that has included attempts to address the issue of hunger and malnutrition in the world. Ambassador Spogli has just shared some of the horrifying statistics with us. full text

[…] This year alone, six million children will die as a result of diseases caused by hunger. If malnourished children do survive, they start school later and most suffer from learning disabilities, thus robbing most of them of their one opportunity to change their fortunes in life. full text
