A moving tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., his life and the civil and human rights movement he led, was held on January 16, 2006 and sponsored by the United States Embassy to the Holy See and the United States Embassy to Italy. Complete with music and narration, the event, held at Rome’s Teatro Orione, marked the twentieth anniversary of the celebration of the federal Martin Luther King Day holiday.

Martin Luther King Day was celebrated with a concert sponsored by the United States Embassy to the Holy See and the United States Embassy to Italy.
The tribute honored Dr. King’s life and featured several rousing gospel songs and narration outlining key events in the U.S. civil rights movement of the 1950s and ‘60s.
The event was kicked off with remarks by the U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, Francis Rooney, as well as the Honorable Jim Towey, Assistant to the President and Director of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.
