[…] “America offers dramatic mobility for immigrants,” said Ron Haskins, the author of Economic Mobility of Immigrants in the United States, during a teleconference July 25. “The great story of America is that it still offers a job to first-generation immigrants and better jobs to their children.” Haskins serves as a principal of the Economic Mobility Project, a collaborative effort involving individuals from four major U.S. think tanks, which recently issued the report. full text

The Web site is one of several initiatives to help immigrants assimilate, said Emilio Gonzalez, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), during a June 12 press conference. […] President Bush told Americans who are skeptical about proposed immigration reforms that the legislation under consideration by the U.S. Congress would enhance U.S. border security and would provide for a temporary worker program and resolve the status of 12 million illegal immigrants to the United States. Speaking in his radio address to the nation June 8, Bush said criminal enterprises are profiting from illegal immigration through such practices as document forgery, human trafficking and labor exploitation. full text

And we have an opportunity to put a good law in place right now.” The reform proposal was crafted by a dozen leading Democratic and Republican senators over weeks of intensive negotiation with the Bush administration.
