Special Message for Visitors to the Vatican
It is currently not possible to make payments inside Vatican City, including in the Vatican Museums, by electronic means such as an ATM, credit, or debit card. Cash is the only accepted form of payment until further notice.
The U.S. Embassy to the Holy See also advises the public of fraudulent ticket and entrance scams advertising special access to Vatican ceremonies. The scammers behind these fraudulent claims are posing as legitimate tour operators, with special ties to the Vatican, in an attempt to extract payments from tourists. All Vatican events are open to the public, free of charge. The Embassy recommends checking the credentials of tour operators and companies prior to submitting payment. Persons concerned about the legitimacy of a tour guide should contact the Holy See directly at +39 06/6982.
