President Bush meets with Leaders of the Community of Sant'Egidio, June 9, 2007
President George W. Bush, accompanied by Ambassador Rooney, visited with the leaders of the Community of Sant’Egidio to discuss “our common commitment to help the poor, feed the hungry, and help eradicate disease.” The Community of Sant’Egidio has been recognized for its work in these fields, including two nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
President Bush thanked the leaders of Sant’Egidio “for hearing the call to love a neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself,” and first heard from Sant’Egdio President Marco Impgaliazzo who explained the foundation of the Community by Andrea Riccardi in 1968 and the roots of this faith-based community and its work for and with the poor. After Mr. Impagliazzo’s introduction, other members of the community were given an opportunity to speak about their work on the ground in Africa.
