U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Mark Dybul Interviewed by Vatican Radio, September 30, 2008
On September 30, Vatican Radio aired an interview with Ambassador Mark Dybul, the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator. He was interviewed by Tracey McClure regarding the United States’ efforts to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. Vatican Radio’s English language service reaches a large global audience. During the interview, Ambassador Dybul highlighted the five year goals established by the President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)—all of which have been met this year. He noted that just a few years ago only about 50,000 people in Africa were receiving antiretroviral drugs, but that number has risen to over 2 million for 2008, largely thanks to PEPFAR. Behind these numbers, he continued, is a story of hope brought to places in which hope had disappeared. He underscored the critical role played by the United States in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and emphasized the need for other countries to play active roles in supporting care and prevention programs.
During his visit to Rome Ambassador Dybul also met with Holy See Officials, Caritas International, and representatives of the Community of Sant’Egidio.
