Ambassador Diaz on Father Damien's Canonization
“The canonization of Fr. Damien is an event celebrated by not only Americans and Belgians, but also by all who follow him as a model for compassionate care of those with debilitating diseases. His example demonstrates the truest meaning of the axiom ‘giving of oneself,’ and he serves as an inspiration for all those who strive to make the world a better place. Father Damien has become the spiritual patron for those suffering from Hansen’s disease (leprosy), HIV and AIDS, and outcasts. His canonization shines the spotlight on the need for understanding and action in service of those infected by these diseases. In order to facilitate such service, the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See and Caritas Internationalis are hosting a conference later this week about pediatric HIV and AIDS and related concerns. It is our hope that Fr. Damien’s example of compassion and advocacy will inspire action on behalf of afflicted children everywhere.”
